2024 Week 1: Jaguars 17, Dolphins 20
If Tyreek Hill wasn’t on the Dolphins, Miami wouldn’t matter. He is so fast and so dominant, that he is the only reason Tua is a starting Quarterback. Tyreek Hill might be the most valuable player in the NFL. The Dolphins had a lucky forced fumble that resulted in a TD, changing the momentum of the game. The defense started stopping the Jags offense, Tyreek had his 80-yard TD catch, and Miami won on a last second field goal. Jacksonville is not a good team and they should have won this game. This builds on the Dolphins from last year where they couldn’t beat playoff-caliber teams. Fraud alert is going off.
==============================
QB Report:
- Tua Tagovailoa (23/37 for 338 yards, 1 TD) was overthrowing receivers left and right, and connected on a few deep balls. Once that Tyreek score hit the offense started moving a little bit better.
- Trevor Lawrence (12/21 for 162 yards, 1 TD) also overthrew countless receivers, and had enough time in the pocket where he should be able to make the easy throws. Why Tua and Trevor are two of the highest paid QBs are beyond me. They’re both helpless.
RB Report:
- Raheem Mostert (6-9-0, 2 catches for 10-0/3) and DeVon Achane (10-24-0, 7 catches for 76-0/7) were in a split role. Achane was electric through the air with 79 yards receiving so they kept going back to him. The issue here is they couldn’t run the ball at all just, 3.2 ypc.
- Mostert is now ruled out for the TNF game and Achane is a gametime decision. Jeff Wilson will play the Raheem Mostert role and Jaylen Wright may see some playing time. Definitely will if Achane is out… dynamic running backs are too important to this offense, and Jaylen Wright might just be the best back on this team.
- This game was a pure split for the Jaguars running backs, Tank Bigsby (12-73-0) and Travis Etienne (12-44-1, 2 catches for 15-0/3) each sporting 12 carries. Bigbsy and Etienne both played well but Bigsby often got the ball when in. Etienne is a fine running back, not elite by any means, but he was the one getting the passing game work. That’s valuable for fantasy football.
Etienne 37 snaps – Bigsby 17. Bigsby isn’t going away
WR/TE Report:
- Brian Thomas Jr (4-47-1/4) led the team in targets/receptions and scored a TD. This was a nice performance by him but he didn’t look like the same receiver we saw in college. That being said, he didn’t get shut down by Jalen Ramsey. BTJ should have had another TD in this game early on but Trevor under threw him and Jalen Ramsey was flagged for an obvious DPI preventing the score.
- Christian Kirk (1-30-0/4) and Evan Engram (1-5-0/4) were also victims of Trevor Lawrence’s poor passing performance.
- Tyreek Hill (7-130-1/12) and Jaylen Waddle (5-109-0/5) are the only looks for Tua in the wide receiver room. Waddle works for Tua because he loves the short throws, and he’s fast enough to be good after the catch.
- The ‘arrest-game’ might be replacing the ‘flu-game’ in modern sports. First Scottie Scheffler is arrested before a round and shoots a 66, now Tyreek is arrested pre-game and goes for 100+ yards and a touchdown.
D/ST Notes:
- Not much to note about either of these defenses since these were too bad offenses facing off.. Miami was killed on the ground in this one so I would watch out for Josh Allen on Thursday Night.
